Eight teams are down to the final four at the U-20 World Cup.

The South Korea U-20 football team, led by head coach Kim Eun-joong, defeated Ecuador 3-2 in the round of 16 at the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 at the Santiago del Estero Stadium in Argentina on Sunday (June 2).

South Korea remained unbeaten in the tournament (2 wins, 2 draws) and advanced to the quarterfinals. They will face Nigeria in the quarterfinals for a spot in the semifinals.

With South Korea’s victory, the quarterfinals have been finalized. They will face Israel and Brazil on April 4. The Israelis are making a splash in their first appearance at the U-20 World Cup.

The Israelis finished second in Group C with one win, one draw, and one loss to Japan to reach the Round of 16. In the Round of 16, they defeated Uzbekistan 1-0 with a dramatic goal in stoppage time. They faced a series of Asian teams, including Japan and Uzbekistan, all of whom came from behind to score theater goals.

Perennial favorites Brazil advanced to the round of 16 with a 2-1 record in Group D and first place in the group. They were joined in the quarterfinals by Italy and Nigeria, both of whom also qualified from Group D. They topped a very competitive group of death. Brazil punched its ticket to the quarterfinals with ease, defeating Tunisia 4-1 in the Round of 16.

Colombia and Italy will face off on the same day. Colombia topped Group C with two wins and a draw. They defeated Israel and Japan in the group stage. In the round of 16, they defeated Slovakia 5-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.

South Korea and Nigeria, the only Asian teams, will face each other on Day 5. South Korea finished second in Group F with one win and two draws. In the round of 16, they defeated Ecuador, the top scoring team in the group, 3-2. They are still one of the unbeaten teams in the tournament with two wins and two draws.

Nigeria reached the round of 16 after finishing third in Group D with two wins and one loss. Despite finishing third, they have the same six points as Brazil and Italy. In the round of 16, they knocked out hosts and favorites Argentina to reach the quarterfinals.

On the same day, the United States and Uruguay will meet to determine the final four teams. The U.S. advanced to the Round of 16 after winning all three Pool B matches. In the round of 16, the US defeated New Zealand 4-0, notably becoming the only team to ever go undefeated and keep a clean sheet at the same time.

Uruguay reached the round of 16 after finishing second in Group E with a 2-1 record. They lost to England, but defeated Iraq and Tunisia to reach the round of 16. In the round of 16, they beat Gambia, who were paired with South Korea, 1-0.

Meanwhile, Group D proved to be the toughest group, with Brazil, Italy, and Nigeria all reaching the quarterfinals, while South Korea, the United States, and Colombia remain unbeaten in the tournament. The U.S. has also been a force to be reckoned with, keeping a clean sheet.
