Kim Eun-joong’s U20 team took a 1-0 halftime lead against France in their first match of Group F at the FIFA U20 World Cup 2023 at the Mendoza Stadium in Argentina at 3:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

The starting lineup was revealed before the match. Kim Eun-ho lined up in a 3-4-3 formation with Lee Young-joon, Kim Yong-hak, and Kang Sung-jin in the back three, Lee Seung-won, Kang Sang-yoon, and Park Chang-woo in the midfield, and Choi Seok-hyun, Kim Ji-su, and Lee Chan-wook in the back four. France used a 4-3-3 formation. Alain Birginius, Antoine Joubert, and Wilsson Odoré were the back three, with Florent Da Silva Sanchez, Warang Bongdo, and Martine Adelinga in the middle. In the 14th minute, Lee Seung-won won a foul in the center of the opponent’s area and kept the ball. Lee took the kick himself and fired a right-footed shot that was blocked by the defense.

South Korea scored the first goal after withstanding the French attack. In the 23rd minute, after blocking a French corner kick, Kim Yong-hak sprinted down the left side of the field and launched a counterattack. Kim Yong-hak peeled off one defender, crossed the halfway line, and found Lee Seung-won cutting in from the other side. After getting close to the penalty area, Lee fired a precise right-footed shot into the back of the net.
