The Pittsburgh Pirates have clinched a sweep of the division rival St. Louis Cardinals. Bae Ji-Hwan got the win.
Pittsburgh won 4-3 at home against St. Louis on 4 April at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. With the win, the Pirates clinched the best-of-seven series and improved to 30-27. St. Louis is 25 for 34.
Bae, who was scratched from the start against left-hander Jordan Montgomery, came in as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning for Mark Matthias, who reached on a fielding error.
Starting at first base, he was able to get home. Then, with runners on first and second, Connor Cho hit a ball over the left field fence to bring in both runners. From 1-1 to 3-1, it was the big hit of the game. Bae scored the game-winning run. Pittsburgh increased its lead to 4-1 after Cho doubled and Carlos Santana singled.
Bae, who remained in the middle infield, laid down a sacrifice bunt with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to put the tying run in scoring position. Unfortunately, the eighth inning opportunity did not result in a run.
Earlier in the day, Pittsburgh fell behind to a Wilson Contreras solo home run in the second inning, but levelled the score in the fifth with a solo shot from Keebrian Hayes. In the sixth inning, the offence took over, with three more runs scoring on a throwing error by third baseman Nolan Arenado.
St. Louis’ resistance was formidable. In the eighth inning, Nolan Gorman hit a two-run home run over the right field fence off Colin Holderman to cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Cardinals would get no closer.
The game was halted for about an hour due to rain that fell during a St. Louis rally in the top of the third inning.
The pitching staffs of both teams were different. St. Louis kept Jordan Montgomery on the mound. Montgomery went 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits, one homer, one walk and five strikeouts. 안전놀이터
